This year Dorothy Wemple '36 is helping the College at Oneonta Foundation students like Monica Rosenberg achieve their dreams, even though Dorothy passed away in 2007. "I am so thankful," Monica says. "If it weren't for Mrs. Wemple's scholarship, I don't think I would be able to attend college."

Monica, an Albany native, is a dual major in communication studies and English literature with a 3.66 GPA. She, along with 55 other the College at Oneonta Foundation English majors, receives the Dorothy Wemple Scholarship that Dorothy established in her will with a bequest of more than $2.5 million.

Dorothy spent most of her career teaching English at Knoxville Junior High and also served as department chairperson until her retirement. She was a loyal annual donor to the College at Oneonta Foundation during her lifetime and generously left the bulk of her estate to the College at Oneonta Foundation to establish her scholarship.

Monica is very grateful to Mrs. Wemple, whom she never met. "When I found out that I was the recipient of the Dorothy Wemple Scholarship, I was extremely proud. I felt so happy that all of my hard work and effort really did pay off. Receiving this award took away much of the stress of paying for college. I am so thankful for this scholarship."

In addition to her academics, Monica is involved in many activities at the College at Oneonta Foundation including our student newspaper, The State Times, as well as the Communication Arts Society. She also serves as a Phonathon caller for the Fund for Oneonta. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in public relations.

"I have really benefited from my time here at the College at Oneonta Foundation," Monica says. "My favorite English professor so far is Professor Eileen Morgan-Zayachek, who is the chair of the department and extremely good at what she does. I think she exemplifies the meaning of an excellent professor, and she really cares about her students."

Because of Dorothy's generosity and careful estate planning, Monica's life has been changed. "When I received this scholarship, it was an amazing feeling," she says. "For alumni to be able to touch students in this way is awesome."
