"I FELT NOTHING BUT JOY"
Obed Done, recipient of the Catherine Harkins Scholarship
Absolute joy was the reaction from the College at Oneonta Foundation psychology major Obed Done when he was told he received the Catherine Harkins Scholarship. The scholarship was established by alumnus Joe Harkins, Class of 1984, in honor and memory of his late mother.
Obed was born in the Bronx to parents originally from the Dominican Republic. His father, a graduate of Lehman College and a military veteran, supports his family of six - including Obed's older brother who also attends college.
Obed came to the College at Oneonta Foundation well prepared academically, having graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA and having been on the honor roll for all four years. "I chose the College at Oneonta Foundation because of its beautiful campus and reputation as a great school," Obed says. "My friend invited me to visit this campus, and I tagged along. I loved it as soon as I saw it. The academics are challenging as well, so I knew I would receive a great education here."
For Obed, this scholarship means fewer loans. "I felt nothing but joy when I was notified of this scholarship. This money will make paying tuition much easier."
Scholarship donor Joe Harkins '84 understands and appreciates Obed's hard work. "Growing up in Brooklyn in a big family, my mother Catherine always stressed education and work ethic. Obed clearly embodies this spirit," Joe says. "Congratulations, Obed, and we wish you continued success!"
When asked what he would say to the donor who made his scholarship possible, Obed says, "I would simply say thank you and explain why this means so much to me. Not many people would give money to a stranger to help with their education, so I think it's a selfless thing to do."
